- Jen (Long) Orser recalls some memories for us:"Back in those days couples just went to the parsonage to get married;there were no big weddings. When I got married Mom made me a nice white dress. It was silk with quite a big lace collar on it, and a belt around the waist. I had Alvretta stand up with me; she just went as a witness (l did the same for Maude). The other witness was the minister's wife - Mrs. Perley Quigg. There was nobody else there. We went up to their home in Stickney and got married. After that we went to Ercell's home in Mainstream where all the neighbours gathered for a big shivaree; they had old saws and things and beat on them.
I stayed in Mainstream from June until December until we moved to town in 1919. When we first arrived we rented the last house on Leola's street - where Rickard's live; we had the upstairs.Laura was born there. I think a Cummings owned the house at that time.
Ercell learned the blacksmith trade from Elisha Shaw. He boarded at Mrs. Nevers' boarding house in Hartland. She was a little bit of relation to the Orsers, or her husband was. She was awfully good to Ercell because she said he looked so much like Joseph.
We built the house with the blacksmith shop underneath in 1923. Owen was born there. Ercell and Lorne shod horses a lot there. If there came an icy spell they would shoe sixteen and seventeen pair a day. I ran a hotel then. Ercell would get up in the morning and say "look, I want you to cook a good big pot of potatoes and lots of meat; I don't know who will be standing around here at noon and I can't run up and eat my dinner and leave someone standing here hungry at all. He'll either have to come and eat or I'll have to stay and finish the work". So I got up and started dinner and began to look around and see who all was there. By and by they would come - one, two, three...
Ercell and Lorne did every kind of work in that shop. Ercell built a beautiful snowplow - a great big one that took two or three pair of horses and they went way out over Sam White's hill. They used it to plough out the hill for the town; and it worked so nice. There was a piece in the paper about it and I cut it out, but I can't find it. He made snow ploughs.
We built Orser Sales and Service in 1946, and it was finished in 1947. We had a big opening and a dance. ... That was a big time. The garage was sold to the town on May 5, 1964.
Ercell was an alderman in the town from 1930 to 1950. He looked after the water and lights. We had an election in '49 just before Ercell finished serving. He ran in it, and Bob Montgomery and another fellow who I cant remember. Ercell got 96 votes and Montgomery got 52. I didn't have any vote then you see - women didn't vote - if you had your taxes paid, you voted.
